ABOUT ME
My name is Hazel
Living near Alicante with my family and our Westie dog. I've had a strong family connection with this part of Spain for over 20 years.

An accomplished public speaker with many years presenting internationally in international companies. I've been a celebrant for several years creating personalised wedding ceremonies across the Costa Blanca as well as personalised Memorial ceremonies.

My own life has been impacted by bereavement and my own grief story allows me to build connections and show deep empathy with others who are experiencing their own loss and are navigating their grief.
I truly believe in the power of storytelling. It allows us to connect, understand, and preserve histories while bridging them to the future. I’m especially captivated by stories that unveil the unique and inspiring journeys of individuals.

My role as a celebrant is about capturing the essence of the lived stories of loved ones lost and delivering eulogies in a personalised and engaging way .
HOW I WORK WITH YOU
I will meet with you in person if possible, by phone or online to learn more about their life, and then i'll lead you through the process of crafting a heartfelt eulogy. If you have some words prepared already, I can incorporate parts of those into the overall ceremony for you.

My goal is to transform the ceremony into a celebration of their life. No service should resemble a resume; their life was much more than a list. We can incorporate music, laughter, and, most importantly, love and warmth.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FUNERAL, A MEMORIAL & A CELEBRATION OF LIFE CEREMONY?
A memorial ceremony and a funeral ceremony both serve to honour and remember, but they differ in key aspects, particularly in timing, rituals, and the presence of the person.
A celebration of life ceremony is a type of memorial service that focuses on honouring and celebrating the life of the person.

The ceremonies that I write tend to blend elements of all three. Always with the wishes of the family first and foremost.
MEMORIALS
Memorial ceremonies can take place weeks, months, or even longer after a person passes.

Because the funeral process usually takes place in Spain in 24-48 hours. It is not unusual to have a memorial ceremony a little while afterwards particularly when family members live far away. To allow everyone time to travel to pay their respects.

One of the benefits of this type of ceremony is that it is more flexible and can be held in a variety of locations, such as a family home, a park or on the beach.

While the tone can still be sombre, memorial services tend to focus more on celebrating the life of the deceased, sharing stories, and remembering the positive impact they had on others.

You can also combine scattering your loved ones ashes with a memorial ceremony. Sometimes a smaller ceremony is held to scatter the ashes directly after a larger ceremony.

I have also been asked to officiate memorial ceremonies on anniversaries of a loved one's passing.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE
A celebration of life ceremony is a type of memorial service that focuses on honouring and celebrating the life of a loved one lost.

It is often less formal and more personal than a traditional funeral, emphasizing the positive aspects of the individual’s life, accomplishments, passions, and the impact they had on others.

The ceremony may include speeches, stories, music, and activities that reflect the personality and values of the person who has passed away. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories, express gratitude, and celebrate the legacy the person leaves behind.

Unlike sombre funeral services, a celebration of life can be more uplifting and may include elements that were meaningful to the deceased, such as favourite songs, hobbies, or traditions. It is often seen as a way to focus on the joy and love the person brought into the lives of others, fostering an atmosphere of gratitude and remembrance.

These ceremonies can be held in various settings, from homes to parks, or even outdoor spaces, and they are adaptable to suit cultural, spiritual, or individual preferences. Ultimately, a celebration of life aims to help those grieving find solace in the positive memories and enduring influence of the person who has passed.
FUNERALS IN SPAIN
SOME CULTURAL DIFFERENCES TO NOTE
As you might expect there may be some differences in the arrangement of funerals in Spain.

The time scale is one thing that some people find surprising. Due to legal and climatic reasons most funerals are required to take place within 24 to 28 hours of a death.
On occasion this can be extended to allow family to travel to be present.

Cremation is the most common option chosen amongst expats, but burial is also an option. In Spain burial often means above ground in what is called a Nicho. Most towns have a cemetery and there are Crematoriums in many of the larger towns.

Unless you have already chosen a funeral director. One will be assigned to you, they may not always have English-speaking staff and you may need support with communication. They will ensure that all of the required documentation is completed. The availability of English-speaking funeral directors in the Costa Blanca is limited but there are some available.
CEREMONY LOCATIONS
CREMATORIUM - ROOFTOPS - BEACH - MOUNTAINS - PRIVATE VILLA - HOTEL RESORT
BALCONY - CITY - BOAT - YACHT CLUB - OLD TOWN
FAVOURITE RESTAURANT - GOLF CLUB - COUNTRYSIDE
You can hold a memorial ceremony or a celebration of life in so many locations. The options largely depend upon the number of people expected to attend, the preferred time and your vision for the ceremony.
